Ted Leonis and Filmanthropy

Leonis Equation
The Leonis equation factored in the following variables envisioning, assessing, developing, commitment, evangelizing, connecting, managing and monitoring (no bad days) and having a higher calling (Frey, 2007 841). For the idea of coming up with Filmanthropy, Leonis has a big idea of developing a brand that merges social cause and filmmaking and funding. He is able to connect this idea or vision of a social enterprise by connecting it to strategies and tactics. Leonis said that there is something meaningful in creating and launching an endeavor (Frey, 2007841). This serves as his higher calling. He is fitted to be a champion of Filmanthropy because he believes that doing social documentary films have social impact on the customers or the viewing audience and on the society as a whole. These films on social issues can effect change in societies all over the globe.

According to J. Gregory Dees  (2001) of the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership at Stanford Universitys Graduate School of Business,  social entrepreneurs create social value through constant innovation and unrelenting pursuit of new opportunities, with a disregard for limited resources and a heightened accountability to serve their constituencies and achieve outcomes. Social entrepreneurs are not confined by barriers that stand in the way of their goals they develop new models and pioneer new approaches to enable them to overcome the obstacles.  Another definition of the social entrepreneur comes from Light (2006) a social entrepreneur is an individual, group, network, organization or alliance of organizations that seek sustainable, large-scale change through pattern-breaking ideas in what and how government, nonprofits, and business do to address significant social problems. Johnson (2000) highlighted three models of social entrepreneurship, these are integrated social entrepreneurship, re-interpretation social entrepreneurship, and complementary social entrepreneurship.

Leonis pattern of idea generation and execution

Although he believes in having a big new idea and having a vision, Leonis said that it is important that we achieve a balance between idea generation and execution. He remarks that it is good to be excited about our business idea, but it is better to translate the vision into action. Vision is the grand thing that drives social entrepreneurs to put up businesses. However, if the vision is not translated into appropriate strategies and tactics, the vision will remain a dream. The execution of the big idea should be in the form of strategies and tactics. Idea generation may be fine but it should be matched with market. The vision may be great but if nobody is buying, then the entrepreneur fails in his venture.

My Big Business Idea
My big idea is putting up a Gift Shop. Its vision is to be  the most-sought after gift shop in the state and in the world. The idea of gift-giving is still very much a tradition among families and friends despite the fact that we live in an age where we can get what we want easily because of Internet shopping. The growth of this business will happen when it will go online by having a website like www.giftshop.com and sell gift items on the Internet and customers can buy online. The gift products that will be sold in my shop will be made by members of the poor communities in our state as my social mission is alleviating poverty among the disadvantaged groups in society. The gifts will be unique in the sense that aside from customized gifts and with personal touch, the gifts will showcase the creativity and talents of the marginalized members of the community. For my target resources, I will use my savings for initial capital and will seek a bank loan to augment my savings. I will also have consignment of the gift items and will tap my former classmates, friends, and colleagues as network members.
