Discussion Question WK3 Active and Passive Verbs in Communication. Business Jargon

This paper discusses two important questions in business communication. The first part of the paper deals with the uses of active and passive verbs and explains why the active verbs generally are more effective in business communication. The second part briefly discusses the organizational and industrial jargon and explains why there is need for good jargon as well as the ways to avoid them.

DQ 1
Business communication is the process of conveying ideas and information within and outside the organization for affective implementation of targets, goals and policies. In fact, by making the flow of information simple and fast the business engages in fruitful activities for long term benefits and profits. Thus, it is of foremost importance for an organization to use active verbs both in speech and in writing to avoid any sort of ambiguity that may prove to be an obstacle. Writing and speaking using active verbs is by far the best way to make the other person interested in the information and message you wish to convey. For example, The referee blew the whistle for the play to start, is an active use of verb while the same could be made into passive form by changing it. The whistle was blown by the referee for the play to start. Here, the stress on the subject is that of referee in the first sentence while the second sentence the subject is the whistle. When the subject performs the action of the main verb as in the first sentence then it is active. On the other hand when something else performs the action then it is passive as in the second sentence. In a business organization simple active verbs ought to be used as they have more power in conveying messages to various sections of the people. In case of passive verbs it tends to obscure the real intention of the message as well as increase the chances of misinterpreting them as they are wordier.

DQ 2
The origin of jargon was initially within the organization or industry and later spread out into the outside world. The real intention of creating jargon in speech and writing was to make an impression on others. All organizations have their own particular jargon. The jargon of business is as old as business itself, but they are the ones which are becoming increasingly important (Czerniawska, 1997). It is only when it takes on an appearance of being instantly appealing with false pretension of it being powerful that jargon is more frequently used. Otherwise, jargon is mainly used within the interiors of an organization and remains as a cover for identifiable special situations or events. Jargon many be useful if two people of the same industry happen to communicate for speedy passage of ideas, information or messages. Many words like LIFO and FIFO have found their places in the technical field over the whole of industrial circle. Yet on the whole it is best to use proper words and sentences while communicating because there is little scope for jargon to transmit proper messages across.
